Caipirinha!

One of the delights of visiting other countries is the gastronomic license to try just about everything that pleases the senses in the name of being open to new cultures. If you find yourself on holiday in Brazil, it would be almost rude not to experiment with the national tipple, Caipirinha. A fiery blend of lime, sugar, ice and a generous dose of ‘Cachaça’ the national spirit made from distilled sugar cane, its intoxicating effect is alarmingly quick to take hold. Just a few of these devilish drinks and you’ll soon be convinced you’re the next samba sensation, as you sway precariously near the edge of the balcony. Don’t say you haven’t been warned.

So how best to enjoy caipirinha without spending the next day lying in your hotel room sweating cachaça from your every pore as you bemoan the worst headache you’ve suffered in living history? Locally based luxury travel experts Dehouche recommend asking the bartender exactly which type of cachaça they use and steering clear of the cheaply made ‘51’ which can bring on a headache at the first sip. Dehouche suggest instead asking for either ‘Sagatiba’ (Sah-gah-chee-bah) or Ypioca’ (ih-pee-oh-cah). 1) Salvador was one of the first cities to be established in Brazil and was the country’s capital until it was succeeded by Rio de Janeiro in 1763. Today it is the third most populous city in Brazil after São Paulo and Rio.

2) Situated on a near triangular peninsula that protects the bay of all saints from the Atlantic Ocean, Salvador can be separated into the ‘cidade baixa’ (lower town) of the port and the ‘cidade alta’ (upper town) Salvador’s historical centre, which includes the today UNESCO protected Pelourinho. The two areas have been connected by the Elevador Lacerda since 1873, an art deco construction, which has become a symbol of the city. Not only does the elevator make navigating the city much simpler, it also affords stunning views of the marina.

3) Rio’s carnival may be the most famous internationally, but Salvador’s carnival is gaining increased exposure and Rio residents Dehouche must concede that today it is actually bigger than Rio’s. 4) Salvador is credited as being the birthplace of modern forms of Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian dance come martial art which was originally banned amongst African slaves. Capoeira withstood the prohibition and in the former half of this century masters like Bimba and Pastinha founded Capoeira schools in Salvador which helped to standardise and popularise Capoeira not only throughout Brazil, but all over the world. 5) Salvador is gaining increasing recognition as a world arts centre, receiving exhibitions that bypass even Rio. Buzios A Great Spot If You Have The Inside Track! - Says Dehouche

Buzios the St-Tropez of South America, the Brazilian fishing village where famously Brigitte Bardot escaped to back in the 60’s has over the last 50 years been the obvious choice for those coming to Rio who want to get away from the city without straying too far off the beaten track. Brazilian Gastronomy - Worth Exploring! Invites Dehouche

Few gastronomical getaways are planned with Brazil in mind, yet a country which has wholeheartedly embraced a myriad of culinary influences over the centuries, has much to offer the foodie.

When you consider that Rio isn’t even ranked as the capital of dining in Brazil, (that award goes to São Paulo- after all they’ve got to win at something) you begin to have an idea of the wealth of choice on offer.

Thanks to its tropical climate, Brazil is home to innumerable types of tropical fruit, unbeknown to European eyes, which are laid out in all their colourful glory at every street market and juice bar. If the smell alone doesn’t tempt you, little will. Amongst Dehouche’s favourites have to be some of the amazon berries, such as açaí (these days becoming a regular on the Euromarket circuit) guaraná, another berry with energy giving properties which is often made into a drink, the sparkling version of which is more popular in Brazil than coca-cola. If your immune system needs boosting try acerola, another amazon berry which boasts more than thirty times as much vitamin C as an orange. Though almost martian in appearance, Dehouche also confess a special weakness for ‘fruta do conde’ (or fruit of the king) though more seed than fruit, it’s not recommended for a first date; however, once tried, this fragrant delicacy is difficult to forget.

Brazilians consider that many of these fruits are not yet sweet enough and add a generous helping of sugar when making juices, so be sure to advise if you’d prefer yours without. In Brazil sugar is added liberally in places you wouldn’t have thought possible. You might think avocado is for a salad, Brazilians mix it with milk and sugar to make a surprisingly tasty smoothie. Sweetcorn too is not just a savoury treat but is mixed with cream, cinnamon and of course sugar to make something altogether more interesting. Ask Dehouche where to find it.




If you’ve still got some teeth left in your mouth after all that, Dehouche additionally recommend you spare some time for paçoca (a melt in the mouth peanut sweet), canjica (a kind of rice pudding made with coconut milk, cloves and cinnamon) and bolo de rolo (the Le Nôtre of swiss rolls, a very fine affair of guava and other unmentionable ingredients) and under no circumstances (except perhaps diabetes) should you miss brigadeiro, a wickedly moreish chocolate and condensed milk confection. Once tried, life will be divided into life ‘before brigadeiro’ (BB) and ‘post brigadeiro’ (PB)

Despite the abundance of sugary fare, breakfast includes a generous helping of savoury goodness and if you’re lucky enough, some home made cheese bread. Sounds simple enough, but when Brazilians go abroad and say they’re ‘morrendo de saudades’ (dying of longing and sadness) it’s usually the cheese bread they’re referring to.

Thanks to the enormous length of Brazil’s coastline, sea food is in no short supply either and each region has a different way of serving it.
