Buzios A Great Spot If You Have The Inside Track! - Says Dehouche

Buzios the St-Tropez of South America, the Brazilian fishing village where famously Brigitte Bardot escaped to back in the 60’s has over the last 50 years been the obvious choice for those coming to Rio who want to get away from the city without straying too far off the beaten track. Dehouche a luxury tailor made outfitter based in Rio whose market are the well healed discerning traveler from Europe and America keen to get under the skin of South America and away from international resorts and chain hotels have always been a little wary of Buzios, yes it’s a great spot for a weekend out of Rio but is it really worth a 9 or 10 hour international flight to get to?

The answer is of course yes, with the proviso that you have to know what you’re doing. In Buzios it’s easy to get unwittingly sucked into overpriced hotels of questionable quality and shops and restaurants that are there purely for tourism dollars and not servicing the locals. But don’t let this put you off Buzios is stunning and with a little insider knowledge can be one of the most enjoyable locations to visit in Brazil, the village is on a peninsular rimmed by no less than 23 gorgeous beaches the hills in the middle have spectacular views out to sea and along the beaches. Due to its proximity to Rio this is a Carioca weekend hang out and so the village can support some lovely boutique shops and restaurants most of which serve up wonderfully fresh seafood as you would expect. Book your trip to Buzios through Dehouche as part of your larger Brazil itinerary and you will have free access to their 24 hour concierge service – get them to organise you with a beach buggy which is the best way of touring around and finding your favourite of the 23 beaches.

In the summer months Dehouche charter their own helicopter, so getting to and from Buzios becomes a lot easier, fun even, especially if you wish to travel a little further than Rio, Angra dos Reis for example, direct from Buzios in the Dehouche helicopter is only 40 minutes compared to a rather tedious 5 hours by road and the costs are similar so no need to suffer road torture. Dehouche recommend a number of boutique hotels and private beach villas in Buzios and get very favorable rates which they pass on direct to their lucky clients!

Brazilian Gastronomy - Worth Exploring! Invites Dehouche

Few gastronomical getaways are planned with Brazil in mind, yet a country which has wholeheartedly embraced a myriad of culinary influences over the centuries, has much to offer the foodie.

Pioneers of the genuinely tailor made holiday, Dehouche, base themselves in Rio where their international team rarely find themselves short of dining options. When you consider that Rio isn’t even ranked as the capital of dining in Brazil, (that award goes to São Paulo- after all they’ve got to win at something) you begin to have an idea of the wealth of choice on offer.

Thanks to its tropical climate, Brazil is home to innumerable types of tropical fruit, unbeknown to European eyes, which are laid out in all their colourful glory at every street market and juice bar. If the smell alone doesn’t tempt you, little will. Amongst Dehouche’s favourites have to be some of the amazon berries, such as açaí (these days becoming a regular on the Euromarket circuit) guaraná, another berry with energy giving properties which is often made into a drink, the sparkling version of which is more popular in Brazil than coca-cola. If your immune system needs boosting try acerola, another amazon berry which boasts more than thirty times as much vitamin C as an orange. Though almost martian in appearance, Dehouche also confess a special weakness for ‘fruta do conde’ (or fruit of the king) though more seed than fruit, it’s not recommended for a first date; however, once tried, this fragrant delicacy is difficult to forget.

Brazilians consider that many of these fruits are not yet sweet enough and add a generous helping of sugar when making juices, so be sure to advise if you’d prefer yours without. In Brazil sugar is added liberally in places you wouldn’t have thought possible. You might think avocado is for a salad, Brazilians mix it with milk and sugar to make a surprisingly tasty smoothie. Sweetcorn too is not just a savoury treat but is mixed with cream, cinnamon and of course sugar to make something altogether more interesting. Ask Dehouche where to find it.

If you’ve still got some teeth left in your mouth after all that, Dehouche additionally recommend you spare some time for paçoca (a melt in the mouth peanut sweet), canjica (a kind of rice pudding made with coconut milk, cloves and cinnamon) and bolo de rolo (the Le Nôtre of swiss rolls, a very fine affair of guava and other unmentionable ingredients) and under no circumstances (except perhaps diabetes) should you miss brigadeiro, a wickedly moreish chocolate and condensed milk confection. Once tried, life will be divided into life ‘before brigadeiro’ (BB) and ‘post brigadeiro’ (PB)

Despite the abundance of sugary fare, breakfast includes a generous helping of savoury goodness and if you’re lucky enough, some home made cheese bread. Sounds simple enough, but when Brazilians go abroad and say they’re ‘morrendo de saudades’ (dying of longing and sadness) it’s usually the cheese bread they’re referring to.

Thanks to the enormous length of Brazil’s coastline, sea food is in no short supply either and each region has a different way of serving it. In fact, there’s so much variation, it’s impossible to do justice to it on this page, but ask Dehouche to organise your luxury holiday in Brazil and they’ll share their ample footnotes with you to ensure you do everything possible to please your palate.

Braving Brazilian bikinis by Dehouche

One of the most universally recognised symbols of Rio must be that of a goddess like beauty wearing the smallest bikini imaginable, lounging on an idyllic beach and cradling a caipirinha; it’s enough to strike body dysmorphia into the heart of any woman. If you’re venturing to Rio from the Northern Hemisphere’s winter, the very thought of squeezing your snowy white figure into one of these creations can be enough to make you want to turn around and get straight on the plane home.

However, luxury travel experts Dehouche, who base themselves in Rio, suggest you instead embrace the ‘fio dental’ or ‘dental floss’ bikini. Despite seeming alarmingly small at first, the styles produced in Brazil are actually kinder to most figures than European or US styles. What’s more, the last thing you want when you arrive at Ipanema’s glamorous posto 9 is to hear people whispering ‘fralda’ as you strut down to the water’s edge (that’s nappy or diaper to you and me). However, if you really don’t feel ready to take the plunge and feel veritably naked at very the thought of donning a ‘fio dental’, Dehouche can recommend several stores in Rio where you’ll find a halfway heaven of flattering, yet slightly less revealing styles.

The latest style to hit Rio is the ‘tomara que caia’ which literally translates as ‘hope it falls down’ and is a strapless top, often twisted at the front and tied at the back, which allows Brazilians to properly show off those strap marks they’ve spent all their lives cultivating. In Brazilian culture, the more defined the tan line, the sexier, and these marks should be shown off at every opportunity. One word of advice from Dehouche is to just be careful when you go to play in the waves as when the current’s strong, the ‘hope it falls down’ can very easily do just that. Ask Dehouche’s personal shopper to help you find a style which mutates between the conventional and the ‘hope it falls down’ (by the means of removable straps) and you’ll avoid this unwelcome fate.
