The Thrill of Brazil: Life's a Beach Party

Brazil has more to it than football, beaches and the supermodel Gisele Bundchen - its property is tempting, too. Indeed, it seems to be helping the country ride out the global recession.

It's got the finest beaches in the world, the most robust economy in South America and a rapidly expanding middle class,' says Paul Irvine, of Dehouche, which seeks out South American travel and investment opportunities.

One of the so-called four ‘BRIC’ nations (Brazil, Russia, India and China) that are predicted to experience an economic explosion in the years leading up to 2050, Brazil should show positive growth even in 2011, albeit by a small percentage.

Its hefty middle class fuels the country's demand for steel, coffee, beef, oil and even car manufacturing.

And according to the World Tourism Organization, Brazilian tourism increased by 170 per cent between 1995 and 2005 - three times the global average - which is good news for buyers. Holiday homes tend to partner tourism and many European investors have been attracted to £50,000 beach properties in the Natal region in the relatively accessible north-east of the country - eight to nine hours flight away.

This affordable part of the country has seen price rises of 20 per cent a year, but now a growing luxury sector is attracting top names in the hotel business.
Anyone who is anyone in the hotel world is trying to get into Brazil at the moment,' says Mr Irvine.

Brands said to be interested include the Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental and Banyan Tree. Dehouche will find buy-to-let new-builds in the economic powerhouse of Sao Paulo, penthouses in Rio, or beach properties. It will also help procure mortgages, which are not generally available for foreigners, although it is possible to get 80 per cent loans on a case-by-case basis (through HSBC).

The best neighborhood in Rio is Leblon, which enjoys views of Ipanema beach and the statue of Christ the Redeemer crowning Corcovado Mountain.

Beachfront apartments sell for £1,200 to £1,500 per square meter and designer Calvin Klein has just bought a £4 million penthouse there.

With good international schools and a more laid-back feel than Sao Paulo, Rio is popular with expats, many of whom have second homes on the nearby Costa Verde.

This lush-green corridor of virgin rainforest between Rio and Sao Paulo - with its huge frigate-birds lending it a Jurassic Park feel - has attracted interest from Amanresorts, as has the north-eastern state of Alagoas.

Alagoas is selling itself as a 'six-star' destination, turning down all-inclusive hotel brands in favour of top names such as Amanresorts and Six Senses Resorts, according to Felipe Cavalcante, president of ADIT Nordeste, which advises investors in the tourism and property sectors.

It has escaped the speculators and mass market tourism development of Natal,' he says. Bahia (a state farther south in Brazil) may be the most exclusive destination in Brazil, but it lacks premier brands.

Indeed, those after a more rustic brand of luxury head to the remote fishing village of Trancoso in Bahia, favoured by Naomi Campbell, Gisele Bundchen and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Beachfront cottages in the 'St Barts of South America' - which has its own landing strip - typically cost between £1.3 million and £2.5 million, and can sometimes costs even more.

Almost all our clients are European - golden boys from London, Russians, Israelis, Swedes, including the royal family, Spanish and Italian,' says Philippe De Smedt, of Brazil Estates.

Beachfront villas can rent for £2,000 to £3,500 a day, but most buyers are motivated by capital appreciation - prices have been going up steadily - and the lifestyle. Brazil's all about living life to the full.

And, with 7,000 miles of beach, an average temperature of 2771C and that famously laidback lifestyle, it certainly lives up to its reputation.

Choque De Ordem

There’s no doubting that since Eduardo Paes became Rio’s mayor at the beginning of the year 2009, the city has been seeing some changes; changes which have had reverberations not only for its residents, but also for the city’s visitors.

This year’s summer was a real scorcher and as Rio’s residents, or Cariocas, flocked to the beach to cool off, Paes decided it was time to instil order at the Cariocas favourite playground. Following his ‘choque de ordem’ or ‘order shock’ programme, a beachwide ban saw an end to everything from ball games before 5pm to the sale of grilled cheese, matte and coconut water. However, Rio’s residents are known for their ‘creativity’ and it seemed unlikely the new regulations would have lasting effect. One way or another, the beach vendors have been slowly making a comeback.

In theory, fresh products such as prawns are now prohibited and all products sold on the sand should have a ‘best before date’. In practice, things are a little bit different. If you find yourself on holiday in Brazil, you’ll undoubtedly want to sample as many local specialities as possible, beach food no exception; but with so many beach vendors sashaying past, calling out the names of their wares to various tunes and tempting you with a waft of their products, how do you know which ones will please your taste buds without upsetting your stomach later?

Luxury travel experts Dehouche are based in Rio themselves and are by no means strangers to the city’s famous beaches. Allow Dehouche to take care of your itinerary and they’ll share their unrivalled knowledge gained through oh so valuable experience with you, so you know whether the unavoidable pineapple man’s novel sales techniques are worth succumbing to and exactly which the most refreshing flavour of ‘picolé’ (home made ice lolly) is.

Dehouche can help you plan your luxury vacation or honeymoon, enabling you to discover the best of Brazil according to your very own personal interests; whether you have a passion for underwater surfing, yearn to watch the sunset over Rio from a helicopter on your honeymoon, dream of jaguar spotting in the world’s largest wetland or simply crave some downtime on the beach consuming outlawed snacks, Dehouche have the inside knowledge to turn your wishes Into an unforgettable holiday.

Dehouche on Braving Brazilian Bikinis

One of the most universally recognised symbols of Rio must be that of a goddess like beauty wearing the smallest bikini imaginable, lounging on an idyllic beach and cradling a caipirinha; it's enough to strike body dysmorphia into the heart of any woman. If you're venturing to Rio from the Northern Hemisphere's winter, the very thought of squeezing your snowy white figure into one of these creations can be enough to make you want to turn around and get straight on the plane home.

However, luxury travel experts Dehouche, who base themselves in Rio, suggest you instead embrace the 'fio dental' or 'dental floss' bikini. Despite seeming alarmingly small at first, the styles produced in Brazil are actually kinder to most figures than European or US styles. What's more, the last thing you want when you arrive at Ipanema's glamorous posto 9 is to hear people whispering 'fralda' as you strut down to the water's edge (that's nappy or diaper to you and me). However, if you really don't feel ready to take the plunge and feel veritably naked at very the thought of donning a 'fio dental', Dehouche can recommend several stores in Rio where you'll find a halfway heaven of flattering, yet slightly less revealing styles.

The latest style to hit Rio is the 'tomara que caia' which literally translates as 'hope it falls down' and is a strapless top, often twisted at the front and tied at the back, which allows Brazilians to properly show off those strap marks they've spent all their lives cultivating. In Brazilian culture, the more defined the tan line, the sexier, and these marks should be shown off at every opportunity. One word of advice from Dehouche is to just be careful when you go to play in the waves as when the current's strong, the 'hope it falls down' can very easily do just that. Ask Dehouche's personal shopper to help you find a style which mutates between the conventional and the 'hope it falls down' (by the means of removable straps) and you'll avoid this unwelcome fate.

Dehouche infers “Hotel Bedrooms Rarely Make the Grade for a Honeymoon”

From four poster beds in colonial mansions to high tech beach bungalows with all the mod cons Dehouche the South American Honeymoon specialists have not just poked their noses in they’ve darn well spent the night in them all checking the finer points of shower pressure and mattress springiness – it’s a tough old job but someone’s got to do it!

Dehouche, based in Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires are not generally sticklers for rules being very much of the opinion that breakfast should be served at anytime and drinks should certainly be allowed in the pool area – they do however always adhere to their 1st commandment “thou shalt strenuously test every hotel bedroom before recommending it” They say it’s amazing how many hotels look good but end up not making the grade – and first impressions can be misleading especially in South America where the most luxurious properties tend to be small independently owned boutique hotels that often have the prerequisite infinity pool and designer vodka bar but do the hot water pipes clank, and just how capable is room service at providing a chocolate pudding in the early hours?

At any one time there are apparently two Dehouche researchers tirelessly sleeping in the finest cotton sheets and washing their hair with the most exclusive Amazonian oils in marble clad bathrooms. Dehouche believe that until you have spent a nights ‘bedding in’ to a place you really can’t know what it’s like which rooms are actually best in terms of view and peace and quiet and yes anal things like water pressure.

Dehouche only visit the most promising new openings in South America and yet they report that only 1 in 5 of these properties make it onto their luxury itineraries. Apart from linens and views and food and waterfall showers and service and location etc. there is also something that they refer to as an elusive “X-factor” that certain ‘Je ne ce qua’ a vibe or a feeling where everything comes together just right to create another level to set a place apart as truly great – this is the nirvana that these tireless modern day explorers seek. And nowhere, Dehouche say is this X-factor more prominent in South America than in Argentina and Brazil. The mixture of the effortless chic and the genuinely luxurious do come together in places as far flung as Colombia and the tip of Chile but they do so time and again right across Brazil and Argentina from a beach bungalow beside a mangroves in the far northeast of Brazil perfect for a Honeymoon set on a secluded beach and with views out to sea from the bed to the icy climes of an exclusive Patagonian lodge with only 4 bedrooms one with a deck and hot tub with views out across a lake to the foothills of the snow capped Andes beyond.

Dehouche on “A few top 'hoods’ in Rio!”

A recent survey carried out by Brazil’s ‘Veja’ magazine questioned Rio de Janeiro’s residents, otherwise known as ‘Cariocas’ on the topic dearest to their hearts, their very own city. The survey sought to discover which neighbourhoods of the city were preferred by residents and also offers some insights for those wishing to travel to here, say locally based luxury travel specialists Dehouche. Everyone’s heard of Copacabana and Ipanema; most international visitors tend to flock to Rio’s beachside neighbourhoods, yet the marvellous city has many more charms at her disposal if you care to look a little harder say Dehouche.

1) Lagoa – Sandwiched between the Atlantic coast and Corcovado mountain, the neighourhood surrounding Rio’s lagoon, was voted by 33% as the best place to keep children entertained and by 44% as the best place to keep in maintain their legendary ‘Carioca shape’. Dehouche are not about to quibble; circled by dramatic peaks and lush green hills, Lagoa is replete with outdoor activities: from cycling and running to skate parks and tree climbing in Parque de Catacumba, the choice is endless and the view unparalleled.

2) Centro- An overwhelming 71% of those interviewed voted for Rio’s business district as the best place to take in cultural events. An eclectic mix of towering skyscrapers interspersed with colonial gems, Centro swarms with crowds of business people in the week and negotiating the pavements awash with street sellers, professional flyer purveyors and market stalls can become social Darwinism; yet come sundown it empties as quickly as it fills to become an out of hours ghost town. Dehouche suggest taking care at evenings and weekends, though there’s no need to bypass the place altogether. The historic centre boasts some 39 cultural venues, including museums, exhibition centres, theatres, historic libraries, music and event venues, monuments, churches and cinemas, as well as a wealth of colonial architecture. The reopening of Rio’s ‘Theatro Municipal’ in centro’s Cinelandia has helped to enrich the cultural scene and the imminent opening of Pinacoteca do Rio on Praça Mauá and the ‘Museu do Amanhã’ (Museum of Tomorrow) designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrva should serve to further reinforce this.

3) Jardim Botânico - The neighbourhood which shares its name with the Botanical gardens at its centre, also shares many characteristics with those gardens; foliage abounds with a third of the neighbourhood covered by forest and 68% of Cariocas agreed Jardim Botânico was Rio’s premier green space. The park itself, some 137 hectares within which dwells over 8000 species of plants isn’t the only park either point out Dehouche. Just down the road at the foot of Corcovado mountain lies ‘Parque Lage’, a wild expanse of gardens, caves and waterfalls. Jardim Botânico is also home to some of Rio’s finest restaurants and bars, whose occupants bask in resplendent views ‘Wherever I look, it’s green.’ comments one Carioca. The neighbourhood allows you to feel as though you are in fact, outside the city.

4) Lapa - The birthplace of Bohemia and the epicentre of Rio’s nightlife. Known for its unmistakable white arches, samba clubs and drinking dens, Lapa beat even Leblon and its luxury restaurants to the title of best place to ‘fazer a festa’ brazilian style. In some senses Brazil’s answer to Shoreditch, on a Friday night the streets of Lapa swarm with all manner of characters who gather here on their way to enjoy live samba, choro, forró and hip-hop shows. The neighbourhood sees such of an influx of revelers at weekends that the local council has resolved to make a great number of the streets traffic free on such occasions; thus allowing the bars and their patrons to spill out onto the pavements and/or into the gutter at ease. Arrange a bespoke luxury holiday with Dehouche and guarantee your table at one of Lapa’s top nightspots.

Battle of the Opera

This weekend saw the reopening of Buenos Aires famous ‘Teatro Colón’ following a seven year restoration, costing $25 million US dollars. The refurbishment of the ornate 2700 seat theatre began with the measurement of its acoustics back in 2001, just as millions of Argentines were plunged into poverty.

However, not even an economic crisis could derail the ambitious refurbishment of the theatre, modelled on Milan’s ‘La Scala’ and the building closed at the end of 2006 so that stucco facades, columns and French stained glass could be painstakingly restored. Experts were brought in to ensure that the work in no way interfered with the delicate natural acoustics for which the horseshoe shaped theatre is world renowned.

The theatre, which hosts ballet and opera performances, was originally opened in 1908 when Argentina was among the world’s richest nations and initial projections had hoped it would reopen in time for the 2008 centenary. However, the careful restorations were only finally complete some two years later, a little behind schedule for the centenary, but fortunately just in time for Argentina’s bicentennial celebrations to commemorate independence from Spain.

This weekend saw thousands of Argentine's gather outside the theatre for the grand reopening, which included a 3D film projected on the theatres exterior wall, showing key moments and performances form the theatres history. Inside, the chandeliers and Italian pink marble stairwells had been returned to their original splendour, giving Europhile Argentines reason to once again be proud of their cultural icon, located in the very heart of the ‘Paris of South America’.

Luxury Latin American travel experts Dehouche offer tailor made tours of Buenos Aires as part of wider tailor made luxury family vacation and honeymoon itineraries with a local guide who actually worked on the restoration of the theatre, giving you an insider’s perspective on the cultural side of Porteño life.

Curiously, Argentina’s rival neighbour Brazil also has the official reopening of its iconic ‘Teatro Municipal’ in Rio de Janeiro, scheduled for later this month. The theatre, which was inspired by Paris’s ‘Opéra’ underwent a similar restoration costing R$70 million (about 38 million US dollars) and enjoyed a limited reopening at the beginning of the month after a two and a half year closure. Rio’s theatre had also originally been scheduled to reopen last year, in order to coincide with the building’s centenary, but suffered a ‘small delay’. Combine a trip to Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro with Dehouche and admire both renovations for yourself.

Dehouche on: Are You Really Safe On Your Argentina Honeymoon?

On the whole, Argentina is a safe country. But some people will say it is safer than others, depending on who you ask. So what’s the score? Dehouche, Argentina honeymoon experts, give you the latest on staying safe in Argentina

It Depends on Who you Ask

Residents of Buenos Aires regularly complain about the rising crime rates in the city – and it’s easy to see why. Robberies and crimes are often reported in the local media which is always hungry for a good scare story.

Yes, crimes do happen here. But in a city of 13 million that’s not much of a surprise. What you have to consider is how dangerous Buenos Aires is in comparison to any other major city, and the answer is not very.

London, New York, Los Angeles – Buenos Aires is no worse than any of these in the scale of dangerous cities. A city will always bring dangers, but none that you should be overly concerned about on a honeymoon in Argentina.

The Bigger Problem: Petty Crime

Violent crime does happen in Buenos Aires, but it very rarely involves tourists. Car owners seem to be the most at risk, especially those who also own large houses in the quieter outskirts of the city.

Tourists visiting the main highlights, as you will be doing on your Argentina honeymoon, the biggest danger will come from pickpockets and petty thieves. And when it comes to staying safe in the city, a few simple rules are always worth following to minimise the risks:

Don’t Look Lost

If you can avoid looking lost during your Argentina honeymoon, you will have more chance off passing off as a local. Although it can be tempting to drag out the Lonely Planet in the middle of the street to find out where you went wrong, you’d do better to take it into a café where you can peruse the pages for as long as you want. Alternatively, buy yourself a cheap ‘Guia-T’, the same guide that all the locals use.

Never Leave Bags Alone

Wherever you are and whatever time of the day it is, your bags pose a tempting target for thieves. You’re bound to meet at least one person who has had their belongings stolen while they were drinking a coffee in a crowded café. Keep your bags close on your Argentina honeymoon, leaving them either on your lap or under the table next to your feet, and never leave them alone on your chair unattended.

Be Alert and Have Fun

Argentina really is a safe country to travel to and if you take a few precautions then you’re unlikely to have any problems on your Argentina honeymoon. Follow Dehouche’s advice to try not to look like a tourist too much, and keep your wits about you, and you’ll be fine wherever you go.

Let Dehouche arrange your luxury boutique hotel and transportation requirements, allowing you to enjoy a whole host of insider tips on where to truly escape from it all on your vacation.

Dehouche On Adventurous Honeymooners!

Dehouche, the specialists in luxury tailor made honeymoons across the South American continent organise many different adventurous experiences for couples who want more than just idyllic deserted beaches. For example what could be more romantic than a private boat trip down the Amazon. Dehouche’s favourite way to experience this unique environment is a luxury trip on your own private river boat. Itineraries are tailor made to any length of time, along the Amazon and its tributaries. Accompanied by an experienced guide, captain and a superb cook who creates culinary masterpieces from the abundant mouth watering local ingredients, this is a wonderfully peaceful and personal way to experience the Amazon.

For the more adventurous still, the company organises personalised speedboat adventures deep into the Amazon far away from all human activity. Your guides set up camp in the evening, cook a basic but delicious dinner and take care of all chores seamlessly. You sleep in hammocks under the forest canopy far away from the 21st Century and the daily grind. By day you trek in the jungle, or explore down small tributaries by kayak, wildlife spotting or perhaps stopping to fish for piranhas or peacock bass.

On another honeymoon with a difference, some couples may opt to learn a new skill, for example Dehouche organises week long kite surfing courses on the remote north coast of Brazil, staying in the small village of Jericoacoara. Clients arrive by light aircraft, a dramatic flight over the rolling sand dunes and palm tree lined coast line, and then spend the week taking private lessons with one of the area’s best instructors (and ex-champion himself), to really get to grips with this unbelievably fun sport. Evenings are spent in the low key (but surprisingly good) sandy floored bars and restaurants of the village, or Dehouche can arrange for a private meal of local seafood served to you by candle light on the beach in front of your stilted hut.

Dehouche Says It is Jungle Out There: Sleeping in a Hammock in the Amazon

Three million square miles of wild rainforest, teeming with feral jaguars, poisonous snakes and flesh-eating insects.

In other words, a great place to set up a hammock for a little shut-eye.

Welcome to Hammocking in the Amazon, your chance to spend the night in an unsheltered hammock in the Amazon jungle, taking reservations now.

In short, you’re about to get extremely well-acquainted with nature. You’ll start by hopping a flight to Manaus, Brazil, and then take a speedboat a few miles upriver with a private guide named Fabio. (Not that Fabio.)

Then, you’ll find yourself in the company of bugs, sloths, giant frogs... and the occasional beam of sunlight poking through the trees. But as darkness sets in and Fabio sees you yawning, he’ll string up a soft-fiber hammock and a mosquito net so you can get to know the other 80% of the Amazon wildlife (monkeys, snakes, maybe one of those jaguars) that’s mostly nocturnal. They supposedly have enough food to leave a creature your size alone... but don’t wear anything that smells too much like howler monkey.

The next morning, we suggest celebrating your survival by swimming with some pink dolphins in the river (yes, they’re really pink) before retiring to the shore for some champagne and piranha soup, a locally renowned aphrodisiac.

Second only to danger.

Dehouche Suggests Fabulous Honeymoon in Argentina and Brazil!

South America is one of the few continents in the world where in a single trip honeymoon couples can combine such diverse experiences as dramatic snow covered mountain scenery, tropical beaches and any range of environments in from some of the driest desert in the world to the planet’s most biologically diverse wetlands.

In the months of July through to September, after a stay in one of Buenos Aires’s chicest boutique hotels - with everything laid on by local luxury tour operator Dehouche from personal shoppers to an exclusive private dinner and wine tasting with an owner of one of Argentina’s top bodegas, couples might start their luxury honeymoon by flying down to the resort of Bariloche in the picturesque Lake District for five days skiing. With its dramatic scenery, uncrowded pistes and perfect dry snow conditions, the Andes have it all, you can experience world-class heli-skiing or learn to ski powder for the first time – tailored for any level of skier and with your own personal pilot and guide. At the end of a day skiing some of the driest powder you can find in the world, you will be rewarded with a satisfying Argentine steak and can retire to your cosy mountain lodge with a roaring fire and thick duvets. Wake the next morning to a breath-taking view of jagged peaks from every window.

Travelling into Brazil via the incomparable Iguaçu falls only for a stop over though to see the best bits – no need to share your honeymoon with the heaving masses, Dehouche clients often skip straight to the best beaches of Brazil’s northeast. The season dictates where to maximise sun, and in August they would recommend the trendy beach village of Praia da Pipa. Dehouche clients stay in surely one of the best hotel rooms in Brazil - a luxury colonial style chalet set among landscaped gardens and jungle, 5 minutes walk from one of the most stunning beaches on the coast. The waters of this dramatic coast line, north of Bahia, are frequented by rare marine turtles and dolphins, which you can spot from the beach. Natural swimming pools in the reefs and crystalline waters make for excellent snorkeling. Dehouche arrange for clients to have a speedboat at their disposal for the chance to swim with dolphins in the Baia dos Golfinhos, or stopping at deserted beaches to eat fresh oysters at a rustic waterside bar in a mangrove lined lagoon.

The range and scope of a country larger than mainland USA can make the idea of planning a trip to Brazil a little daunting. However, by thinking about what you really want from the trip (and what is available) you should be able to plan an unforgettable honeymoon with a little care and attention.

First off, after a hectic wedding build up the first thing you're likely to want to do is get straight to the beach. But which type of beach? With over 4,000 miles of coastline Brazil has a huge range of different beach locations, so you should think about which suits you best:

- For Rustic chic and laid back beach village life, there's no place better than the hip beach village of Trancoso. There's plenty of restaurants, bars and shops in the village (though all low key luxury, very much in keeping with the natural style of the place) and great beaches nearby. It does get busy (and very expensive) during New Year's Eve and Carnival.

- For ease of access, Buzios (to the East of Rio) and the 'Costa Verde' (to the West) can't be beaten as you don't have to jump on a plane to get there from your international flight. Naturally some of the exclusivity can be lost, but choosing the correct hotel will make the difference. Buzios has more options for bars and nightlife, whilst further down the coast in Paraty or Picinguaba things are a little more relaxing (particularly in Picinguaba)

- For water sports (kite surfing and windsurfing) and possible one of the most unique beach locations in the world, Jericoacoara can't be beat. This is a very secluded spot on the North coast of Brazil surrounded by giant sand dunes. The seclusion does mean that travel takes a little longer, but it really makes for an unforgettable experience

- For tropical island seclusion, Boipeba is a great place to honeymoon, with miles and miles of class palm fringed beaches and a feeling that you have the place almost to yourselves. The lack of development here means that full luxury just isn't present but there are some charming pousadas to choose from which are very comfortable personal places to stay

- For high end luxury, seclusion and deserted beaches, Corumbau in the South of Bahia (a couple of hours drive from Trancoso) is the perfect place to unwind in full comfort.

- For the most unique and exclusive honeymoon beach destination one needs look no further than Fernando de Noronha, a protected tropical island paradise a one hour flight from the north east coast. The protected tropical waters are teeming with sea life making this one of the premier destinations for diving for the world. The strictly limited number of visitors to the island (around 400), means, that the beaches are deserted and are the perfect romantic setting for your honeymoon. Exclusivity comes at a price however with accommodation significantly more expensive than the mainland.

Celebrate New Year’s Eve 2011 in Rio de Janeiro

Who doesn’t harbour a lifelong dream of celebrating New Year in Rio, dressed in the hippest white outfit to show off a blazing tan, as fireworks explode like confetti overhead? Ride the wave of the infectious Brazilian party spirit and welcome 2011 in with a bang. Latin America’s most marvellous city moves fast, so here are the Dehouche insider’s tips to get the very best of it.

12 pm - Start the celebrations with a long, lazy lunch at Aprazivel in Santa Teresa. This wonderful restaurant is set high up on the hill of Santa Teresa, Rio’s bohemian quarter, and has truly inspirational views of Rio, particularly from the private tree house: Just ring the bell for another passion fruit caipirinha.

3 pm - Weave your way around the stunningly restored colonial mansions, home to artists, writers and musicians, then catch some live samba at Bar do Miniero, before settling down to some serious pampering at the world class spa at Hotel Santa Teresa.

6pm - New Year just wouldn’t be the same without a show stopping outfit. Stop off at Isabella Capeto’s gorgeous atelier before heading back to your ocean front hotel suite from some serious preening. Tradition is to wear white in honour of Iemanja, the goddess of the sea.

9pm - Champagne on the rooftop pool at the Fasano party is the only place to kick off celebrations. Mix with Latin America’s glitterati over a sumptuous seafood buffer at Al mare, before heading into achingly hip Londra bar for some serious dancing.

12pm - It’s a choice between the balcony at the Copacabana Palace or a private penthouse to watch the sky burst open with an incredible fireworks display, as thousands of revellers dressed in white light candles on the beach below.

3am - Follow the fashion crowd to continue the fun at the private party held at one of Rio’s top boutique hotels, La Suite. Perched on a cliff above the sea and surrounded by jungle, its breath-taking views are almost as legendary as its parties

6am - Pick up a bottle of champagne and head to Arpoador on Ipanema beach to toast the year’s first sunrise.

9am - By now you definitely deserve some top class brunch, and what better place than lounging on a bed in Parque Lage, a beautiful restored colonial mansion surrounded by sumptuous tropical gardens.

12am - After a spot of people watching and coconut water on Ipanema beach, the feather down pillows of your hotel suite await: it’s time for a nap before cocktail hour beckons once more.

A Diverse Brazilian Honeymoon by Dehouche.

For those people who want more variety and adventure on their honeymoon than just sitting on the beach, Rio based South America experts Dehouche are the talented fixers to turn to (although they are likely to recommend that you spend some of your time on Brazil’s fabulous beaches!). An example of the sort of trip that they can put together would perhaps see the lucky couple start their honeymoon with two nights in Salvador, a fascinating city with a vibrant African culture that is felt in everything from its music to its exotic cuisine. The hotel, one of the best luxury hotels in Brazil, is an immaculately converted convent with an ideal position in the heart of the historical centre, a very romantic stop for the first couple of days of the honeymoon. Dehouche will arrange for a short walking tour of the ‘Pelourinho’ with their fabulous guide Gabriela who will ensure a fun time and an inside track on the colorful history and culture of this one time capital of Brazil

Honeymooners might then head inland for four days in the Chapada Diamantina national park, which is a little off the beaten track and gives a taste of the relaxed pace of life in the Brazilian interior. Here one resides in the sleepy colonial town of Lencois, Dehouche select another one of their fantastic guides this time it might be Ronald who would look after guests for the duration of their stay in this remote landscape for the whole stay, Ronald tailors excursions to the personal preferences of the clients – just as it should be. Daily excursions can be treks and picnics on tabletop mountains, swimming in crystal clear streams and waterfalls. In this unique spot one can be as active or not as one likes, and anything can be organized from mountain biking to horse riding and from rock climbing to caving. The hotel is a reselected is a gem, with a very charismatic owner and most importantly a very impressive breakfast spread to give energy for the day ahead!

On return to Salvador, the next location might involve a flight south to the village of Trancoso, on the palm tree lined ‘Discovery Coast’. Trancoso has a great atmosphere, and although very trendy with the jet set of Rio and Sao Paulo, as well as in-the-know international travelers, it has lost none of its charm as a supremely laid back Bahian beach village. Lucky Dehouche Honeymoon couples stay in a luxurious villa at the Uxua hotel, beautifully peaceful and secluded set in tropical gardens, but none the less right where one wants to be on the quadrado, with the combination of chic restaurants, bars and artists studios set in the traditional brightly colored fisherman’s houses. Uxua also has a large private area and cocktail bar down on the beach. Dehouche arrange for a jeep during the stay – lots of fun to potter down the coast visiting the many secluded coves and simple villages, where there are endless beaches and little restaurants serving up great seafood.

After a good 5 or 6 nights in Trancoso why not continue south to Rio for three nights in the superb Fasano hotel right on Ipanema beach front. This is without a doubt the best luxury hotel in the city, lucky guests will have a Dehouche selected favorite suite with a balcony looking out over Ipanema beach. It has the largest rooftop swimming pool in Rio, where the spa is also housed looking out down the Ipanema and Leblon seafronts. It also has one of Rio’s best restaurants, first class Italian style seafood. Honeymooners will have a personalized tour with our guide Leonardo the Dehpouche expert guide, as throughout the Honeymoon couples will have the benefit of the Dehouche list of recommendations and their 24 hour concierge service is on hand to organize anything at the last minute - from restaurant bookings to helicopter trips

Finally why not finish the Honeymoon in style on the stunning beaches of the Costa Verde, the Atlantic rainforest covered coastline between Rio and Sao Paulo. Stay in a charming boutique pousada, just on the edge of a little fishing village with beautiful views down the coast. Set up just above the beach, and the hotel has a large swimming pool and deck area. As well as being a very comfortable and stylish place to finish the honeymoon, it is also a great look at the ‘real’ rural coastal Brazilian life. It is an excellent place to spend several days, as aside from relaxing and enjoying the hotel’s spa services or many beaches of the coastline, there is plenty else to do; walks to waterfalls in the surrounding rainforest, kayaking or snorkeling trips, visiting islands and deserted beaches a thoroughly charming spot in which to finish a wonderful Honeymoon in Brazil.

Tour do Rio

The ‘Tour de France’ is over for another year; the competition which began in 1903 and which annually ignites not only Gallic passion but at times international furore; from strikes (only in France) to blockades, diversions and even sneaky train rides. Yet there’s a new event to mark on the international cycling calendar, itself beginning in a city which divides the hearts of many; ambivalence is not a feeling often harboured towards the painfully beautiful Rio de Janeiro and the ‘Tour do Rio’ promises blood, toil, tears and sweat in abundance.

The first competition of its kind in Latin America, the tour is due to begin in earnest tomorrow, covering some of the most spectacular scenery the state of Rio has to offer between now and the 1st of August. Organisers hope that the event will do for Brazil what the Tour de France has done for France and the Giro d’Italia has done for Italy. The tour has already generated 1500 jobs and according to luxury Brazilian travel experts ‘Dehouche’, to some extent marks the beginning of a new era for the city, which over the coming years will host a myriad of international sporting events including both the world cup final in 2014 and the summer Olympics in 2016. However, despite the city’s association with inherent natural beauty, Rio’s residents, or Cariocas, were recently named the most obese in Brazil by local magazine ‘Veja’, suggesting the event might inspire those carrying extra kilos to get in shape, as well as offering training for potential future athletes. Ouch.

The competition to which even Lance Armstrong was invited, (though his appearance is sadly doubtful due to having just completed the Tour de France) will cover some 783km, the first stretch of which will traverse the stunning coastal road from the city of Rio to the port of Angra, on Rio’s Emerald Coast. Led by a carnival akin to that of its predecessor, the competition will go on to negotiate mountains, beaches and colonial towns as 150 athletes and an estimated 200,000 people follow the course whose road eventually leads back to the marvellous city itself and cyclists compete to cross the finish line within the inimitable bay of Botafogo, framed by Sugar loaf mountain and overlooked by Christ the Redeemer from atop the Corcovado mountain. ‘Dehouche’ who are resident locally, intend to be there to witness this exciting moment in Rio’s history.

The 26km warm up stage in the mountainous region above Rio which started in Petrópolis and wound its way towards nearby Teresopolis has already been won by Brazilian cyclist David Leite. However, the stages of the tour itself will average a sweaty 150km per day; the attraction? Total prize money of R$175,000 (approx 100,000 USD) which will be distributed amongst the first 20 to complete each of the various stages, with total prize money of R$35,000 for the overall winner; whether any yellow t-shirts or similarly themed clothing will also be awarded remains to be seen. The order of the first stage will be decided in Copacabana this evening as participants prepare themselves for the first test. None of the ‘Dehouche’ team members have signed up to participate this year as they’re far too busy taking care of clients holidays, but there’s always next year.

Sao Paulo Just Keeps Getting Better! – Assures Dehouche

The Fasano group has announced recently that they are again starting work on the development of their neighboring building. The development will create a further 20 guest rooms, including a huge presidential suite (to respond to the increasingly large entourages of the increasing number of international celebrities who are visiting the city), as well as a full sized rooftop swimming pool and another bar, which as with the Fasano’s Barreto in Sao Paulo, or Londra in Rio de Janeiro, will undoubtedly quickly become a popular haunt Brazilian and foreign celebrities alike. Although they have been in possession of the property for some years, the project was put on hold during the recent ‘crisis’ times, but has been taken up again with gusto in response in particular to the increasing number of leisure visitors to the city. According to luxury travel company Dehouche’s concierge, who makes a point of always having his finger on the pulse of this trend-setting city, Fasano insiders have been saying that they could have sold these new rooms twice over in the last few months (even though its low season), and 40% of requests have been from international (largely US) tourists, travelling for pleasure not business.

Sao Paulo may long have been the premier business destination in South America, in its role as the continent’s economic powerhouse, but it is only in recent years that tourists have begun to appreciate the city’s more laid back side. For much the same reasons people visit New York, the main draw to Sao Paulo is its restaurants, nightclubs and plentiful culture – from the ever bigger SP fashion week, open-air concerts in Ibirapuera park, street theatre on Avenida Paulista, to London style impromptu but very much gentrified ‘raves’ in abandoned warehouses.

As always national tourism is leading the trend, also encouraged by a current TV campaign from the Sao Paulo council, but the rest of the world hasn’t been slow to catch on, and Dehouche is receiving an ever increasing number of requests to include the city in their itineraries - surprisingly mostly from city dwellers themselves in New York, LA and London. As always Dehouche clients are armed with an up to date list of goings on in the city to make sure they are in all the right places at the right time, and nowhere else does a concierge service come in quite as handy, whether its securing tickets to the opening of the latest art sensation, or booking a table at one of the city’s top nightclubs.

Let Dehouche arrange your luxury boutique hotel and enjoy a whole host of insider tips on where to truly escape from it all on your luxury or honeymoon vacations.

Waterfalls and Shortness of Breath! - Explains Dehouche

There’s a great deal of debate as to where you’ll find the world’s largest waterfall, not to mention just how you measure this: Width? Height? Flow? One thing’s for sure however, Iguassu falls, located on the border between Brazil and Argentina offers the visitor some of the most spectacular views, as well as the ability to get close enough to hear its roar and feel its spray – simply breathtaking!

The rivalry between Brazil and Argentina could easily be likened to that between France and England and unsurprisingly there’s also a great deal of debate as to just which side affords the best view of the falls. Argentina has claimed about two thirds of the falls as its own and some argue that this in fact serves to make the Brazilian side superior; being that it offers you a view of the Argentinean side. Perhaps the only way to put an end to the debate is to ask luxury travel experts Dehouche help you organise a tailor made itinerary to Brazil and Argentina and make up your own mind.

Dehouche can arrange accommodation on the Brazilian side in the sumptuous ‘Hotel das Cataratas’ one of very few hotels inside the park itself, where you can enjoy panoramic views as you take breakfast on the terrace. Later in the day, Dehouche can whizz you across the border to the Argentinean side, where you can take an exhilarating boat ride close enough to the falls to get seriously wet. Dry off in the sunshine before journeying to the highest point, where you can cross 1km of river by walkway, marveling at the mist that rises up to 150 meters above the falls long before you reach them. Yet little can prepare you for the experience that is peering down into the devil’s throat itself; a horseshoe shaped cataract 150m wide where the falls crash almost 300 feet to the rocks below.

In contrast to the grandeur of the falls, the towns of Foz do Iguaçu and Puerto Iguazu are little to write home about; the falls are undoubtedly the main attraction here. If you’re hoping to take in other destinations in Brazil and Argentina, you probably won’t feel the need to linger. With Dehouche as your guide, you can be sure of taking in all there is to see in as little as 24 hours, leaving ample time to explore the many other natural wonders this continent has in store as part of a fabulous luxury vacation or romantic honeymoon.

Let Dehouche arrange your luxury boutique hotel and enjoy a whole host of insider tips on where to truly escape from it all on your honeymoon.
