Celebrate New Year’s Eve 2011 in Rio de Janeiro

Who doesn’t harbour a lifelong dream of celebrating New Year in Rio, dressed in the hippest white outfit to show off a blazing tan, as fireworks explode like confetti overhead? Ride the wave of the infectious Brazilian party spirit and welcome 2011 in with a bang. Latin America’s most marvellous city moves fast, so here are the Dehouche insider’s tips to get the very best of it.

12 pm - Start the celebrations with a long, lazy lunch at Aprazivel in Santa Teresa. This wonderful restaurant is set high up on the hill of Santa Teresa, Rio’s bohemian quarter, and has truly inspirational views of Rio, particularly from the private tree house: Just ring the bell for another passion fruit caipirinha.

3 pm - Weave your way around the stunningly restored colonial mansions, home to artists, writers and musicians, then catch some live samba at Bar do Miniero, before settling down to some serious pampering at the world class spa at Hotel Santa Teresa.

6pm - New Year just wouldn’t be the same without a show stopping outfit. Stop off at Isabella Capeto’s gorgeous atelier before heading back to your ocean front hotel suite from some serious preening. Tradition is to wear white in honour of Iemanja, the goddess of the sea.

9pm - Champagne on the rooftop pool at the Fasano party is the only place to kick off celebrations. Mix with Latin America’s glitterati over a sumptuous seafood buffer at Al mare, before heading into achingly hip Londra bar for some serious dancing.

12pm - It’s a choice between the balcony at the Copacabana Palace or a private penthouse to watch the sky burst open with an incredible fireworks display, as thousands of revellers dressed in white light candles on the beach below.

3am - Follow the fashion crowd to continue the fun at the private party held at one of Rio’s top boutique hotels, La Suite. Perched on a cliff above the sea and surrounded by jungle, its breath-taking views are almost as legendary as its parties

6am - Pick up a bottle of champagne and head to Arpoador on Ipanema beach to toast the year’s first sunrise.

9am - By now you definitely deserve some top class brunch, and what better place than lounging on a bed in Parque Lage, a beautiful restored colonial mansion surrounded by sumptuous tropical gardens.

12am - After a spot of people watching and coconut water on Ipanema beach, the feather down pillows of your hotel suite await: it’s time for a nap before cocktail hour beckons once more.
